What I've learned this week amounts to this: it's about three things in Korea, business, the show, and the mind. The soul plays such a minimal part in the culture of these people, it almost seems silly. I've talked about the shameless aping that goes on in a lot of aspects of Korean culture, from car design, to LIFE design, and often without any clear ideas as to why something was done or said a certain way in the first place. It's all true. That all comes in as part of the show, really. Business and the mind are the other cohorts, and you realize that with 50-million or so on this little plot of God's quarter-acre, life comes cheap, almost. The business of humanity. The mind is the instrument that makes it all possible, by analysis, and thought, but originality? It's as though it's never been even imagined.
