I had meant to respond to this a few days ago, when the story first broke, and it just kinda slipped my mind. I saw the story about the suit brought against NASCAR by one of the major team's travel coach drivers, who is black (or African-American, if you prefer,) and who was apparently repeatedly referred to by that nastiest of all "N" words, and accosted by drivers from teams, who donned white pillowcases for the faux-Klan look. He apparently had won his bid to be given another position in an effort to avoid further denigration, but nothing has apparently been done about it to this point. To NASCAR, and everyone involved with it, I say, quite frankly, 1963 is long gone; civil rights are indeed an expectation in this country, and rightly so. And be that as it may, I say to the coach driver involved, 2006 though it may be, you can't get involved with what is quite possibly the biggest and least enlightened of all possible Good-Old-Boys networks, and think you're going to be treated with ultimate civility. It just ain't gonna happen. 90+ percent of all NASCAR teams are based in the south, and, well, given the continued sales of Rebel flags for display on cars and pickup trucks, there's certain to be a segment of the population for quite some time into the foreseeable future who simply will not accept that the south lost the Civil War. Say whatever you will about it, but as a show of support, not even necessarily for this coach driver, but for simple enlightened attitudes, period, I hereby declare my own little boycott on the support of NASCAR; I'm not watching the races, although I haven't very much, and I'm not buying the team memorabilia until this is settled once and for all, and this guy at least gets some of the respect he has been promised. I've always found FIA World Rally to be more interesting anyway. I'm not expecting a huge movement to follow me, although it sure would be striking a blow to NASCAR, but somebody's gotta stand up for not being stupid, and for doing what you say you're going to. And to all my southern friends, some of whom read this regularly, you're all smarter than the average NASCAR fan, and thus exempt from any particular vituperation, just understand the cause.
