There are very likely a lot of people who aren't amazed, and won't be, at some of the songs that get in my head. The latest? Bob Seger's "Turn the Page." If you own "Live Bullet," you know this one, famous for Alto Reed's almost mournful, utterly desolate, but none-the-less absolutely wonderful sax solo. "...But your thoughts will soon be wanderin', the way they always do, when you're ridin' 16 hours and there's nothing much to do/And you don't feel much like ridin, you just wish the trip was through...." And that's just for starters. "Well, you walk into a restaurant, strung out from the road, and you feel the eyes upon you as you're shakin' off the cold/You pretend it doesn't bother you, but you just want to explode.....Most times you can't hear 'em talk, other times you can, the same old cliches, 'is that a woman or a man?' But you always seem outnumbered, you don't dare make a stand..." And then the payoff, of course. "Out there in the spotlight, you're a million miles away, every ounce of energy, you try to give away/And the sweat pours out your body like the music that you play...." All of which, I guess, is the here and now in a nutshell. The people, and the energy are different with me, but a lot of the feelings ring true. Big as all that is, though, there's still no denying what matters. It's still about my future, and by that standard, I can't turn the page fast enough. But it's all happening.
