Okay, well, for those yearning for the days of the blog from this trip when I post real information with regard to what was going on, well, truthfully, there isn't a lot. I did, however, have a fun moment in one of my classes while working with a story in the book about Emperor Penguins. For those not in the know, (myself included before all of this,) The Emperor Penguin is the largest of the Penguin species, and lives in Antarctica. After the female lays her single egg, it's the male's job to take care of said fetus for the next two months, protecting it from the cold, the Polar Bears, and anything else that might concievably threaten it. The female, meanwhile, goes off into the sea to eat, swim, shop with her girlfriends, and do whatever it is female Emperor Penguins can do for two months. The male, of course, has this egg on top of his FEET, mostly unable to eat, move, and probably poop for the next two months. His only solace would seem to be talking to his Emperor Penguin guy-buddies, discussing sports and talking trash about the Emperor Penguin alpha-male. All while scrutinizing the extent of their respective weight loss. My job in front of the class was to demonstrate some of the points of attempting to stand perfectly still for two months, except for the times when the Penguins all huddle together when it's cold, move around, and come across a slippery slope just for fun. Then they slide on their bellies, while STILL trying to hold this egg on top of their feet. Down on the floor I was, sliding around attempting to imitate this experience, and regaling my kids with other antics. They laughed, I had fun, it was all good. As for the reward for the Emperor Penguin when his mate comes back, assuming the chick is alive and well, one can only presume that his reward amounts to Penguin nookie from his mate, year after year. That, and going off on his own to some Penguin sports bar for two months to feed on Krill, fish, and presumably semi-decent nachos. Maybe an MGD, if it's on tap. Or maybe that's just in my mind.
