I spotted a little poster today, with a man and woman turned away from each other; the copy said something like "She said we didn't have enough money to buy beer all the time, until I caught her spending $65 on makeup. I said, 'how can you do that, if I can't buy beer?' She said 'I do it so I can be pretty for you.' I told her that's what the beer was for. I guess I'm not gonna see her anymore." It would have been funnier, I suppose, had I not seen it in a high school classroom. We're all supposedly pitching in as teachers and responsible adults, to help young people realize that alcohol doesn't help solve your problems, only to find some of the incorrigibles are on the wrong side of the fence. It sure as hell didn't help me as a substitute to have the students thinking the regular teacher was a drunkard; makes it harder than hell to impress upon them that things need to get done. Comment of the day? "You're a SUBSTITUTE! We're not supposed to WORK!" I almost pity that poor girl. Almost; child, if I gotta make sure that things get done, and you're part of that program, you will NOT be failin' ME! Period! Understand me here, I'm not about to go taking on the role of Truffle Pig, to root out all the substance abusers, pedophiles and rampant idiots from education, I shouldn't have to. Theoretically, we have enough measures in place to make sure that we're all accountable, and things still manage to happen. I probably swore at some point I wasn't gonna harp on this anymore, but every time a teacher is perceived as a drunkard, or a pedophile, or whatever, it makes it that much harder to convince students that such behavior is wrong. I can't do this alone, I'm sure as hell not about to. I just wonder if anybody else thinks it's a bad idea to leave such negativity unchecked.
