I gotta admit, it wasn't a day I ever could have expected, but, man, was it ever cool. Whenever I come across combinations as a sub like teachers who do "math and social studies," I normally prepare for the worst. Today I was at a middle school, and copped just such an assignment; the surprise in the lesson plans? "Please help the students write their names in Korean." Was an assignment ever more perfect? And as much as she had done to spell the students names, the students also couldn't read her writing, so it was indeed up to me to decipher the letters for them. Freakin' pinch me. Whether she'll have anything to say upon her return is, of course, still up in the air; nothin' bad, I hope. But, DAMN! I'd love to do more like that. Never mind that there was the usual amount of sub/student hijinx, but I could hang. Some of the students even asked if I could come back and teach more. Sigh. I can dream can't I? Maybe I can do more than that, of course, but then again....well, I have indeed made some plans, but I'm not gonna jinx myself by talking too much. Everything still has yet to be determined. Perhaps, in the immortal words of Bachman Turner Overdrive, you ain't seen nothin' yet. Yeah, a great line coming from a journalism major. I could also lament what would appear to be the death of traditional journalism as we have known it, what with the imminent disappearance of so many major newspapers. The watchdog of a free society; I suppose watchdogs aren't necessarily supposed to be known for their impeccable manners so much as their nasty bite, but it's sad. And worse than that, as a guy with a Bachelor's in Journalism, day by day, I'm more of a dinosaur. Augh. Here's to the future, anyway.
